What You'll Study
Introduction: Why Parables?
Matthew 13:10–17; Mark 4:10–12
Purpose of Parables
Learning Objectives
Participants will understand why Jesus used parables as a means of revealing truth to the receptive and concealing it from the unresponsive. They will be able to explain how spiritual openness affects understanding and identify ways to cultivate a heart that truly hears.
The Sower and the Soils
Matthew 13:1–23
Hearing and Receiving
Learning Objectives
Participants will analyze the four soil types and connect each to personal attitudes toward God’s Word. They will assess which “soil conditions” are present in their own hearts and outline practical steps for becoming more receptive to Scripture.
The Wheat and the Weeds
Matthew 13:24–30, 36–43
Patience and Judgment
Learning Objectives
Participants will explore how the parable of the growing seed reveals God’s sovereign role in kingdom growth. They will recognize that spiritual transformation often occurs beyond human effort or visibility. They will identify one area in their lives or ministry where they can rest in God’s timing and trust His ongoing work.
The Mustard Seed and the Yeast
Matthew 13:31–33
Small Beginnings, Great Impact
Learning Objectives
Participants will explore how small beginnings—like a mustard seed or yeast—illustrate the transformative power of the kingdom. They will identify areas in which God is quietly at work and develop one tangible way to nurture kingdom growth in their community.
The Hidden Treasure and the Pearl
Matthew 13:44–46
Kingdom Value
Learning Objectives
Participants will interpret the parables of the hidden treasure and the pearl as calls to recognize the incomparable worth of the kingdom. They will evaluate their personal priorities and articulate one way to pursue the kingdom with greater wholeheartedness.
The Good Samaritan
Luke 10:25–37
Compassionate Action
Learning Objectives
Participants will examine the Good Samaritan as a model of boundary‑crossing compassion. They will discern what it means to “go and do likewise” in their context and plan one act of mercy that embodies Christ’s love.
The Prodigal Son
Luke 15:11–32
Grace and Restoration
Learning Objectives
Participants will analyze both sons in the parable of the prodigal to understand sin, repentance, and grace. They will reflect on how the Father’s love restores broken relationships and consider one way to extend that same grace to others.
The Wise and Foolish Builders
Matthew 7:24–27
Living the Parables
Learning Objectives
Participants will synthesize what they have learned about hearing and doing Jesus’s words. They will define what it means to build a life on obedience to Christ and identify one specific practice that will help them live out His teaching daily.
The Pharisee and the Tax Collector
Luke 18:9–14
Humility and True Righteousness
The Ten Virgins
Matthew 25:1–13
Watchfulness and Readiness
